What Really Happens in a Baby & Toddler Music Class?

Starting a music class with your little one can be exciting—but also a little uncertain. If you’ve never attended a music and movement program before, you might be wondering: Will my child pay attention? Will they sing along? What if they just want to run around or do something else entirely?

Don’t worry—you’re not alone in wondering those things, and the answers might surprise you!

At Freebird Music Studios, our Nestlings program is specially designed for infants and toddlers aged 0–3 and their caregivers. Here’s a closer look at what to expect—and what not to expect—when you join us.

🎵 It’s Normal for Toddlers to Move (a Lot!)

One of the biggest misconceptions about baby & toddler music classes is that children should sit still and “follow along” like little students in school. But here’s the truth:

👉 Young toddlers have incredibly short attention spans—just 2–5 minutes per year of age.
That means a 2-year-old might engage with something for 4–10 minutes before needing a change of pace.

Our classes are built around this reality. We offer short, varied activities—from singing and action songs, to instrument play, to movement games and parachute fun—to keep little ones engaged in a developmentally appropriate way. No one is expected to sit still in criss cross applesauce!

🔁 Repetition Is Your Friend

You might notice that we repeat many of the same songs week after week—and that’s by design!

Repetition helps babies and toddlers:

  • Recognize melodies and rhythms
  • Feel secure in a predictable routine
  • Build confidence through familiarity
  • Eventually sing along or anticipate actions

Even if your child seems quiet or distracted in the early weeks, you may be surprised when they start humming a tune at home or clapping at the right time. It’s all sinking in—even when it doesn’t look like it! Little ones learn so much just through observation and immersion – it make take a few weeks before your child is ready to start actively participating and that is totally normal!

🧠 Learning Through Play

Our classes are filled with joy and silliness—but they’re also rich in early childhood development. Through music, your child is practicing:

  • Language development through lyrics and rhyme
  • Gross and fine motor skills with movement and instruments
  • Social-emotional learning through turn-taking, listening, and expressing feelings
  • Musical skills like beat, pitch, and rhythm—all the foundations for future music learning!

💡 It Might Take a Few Weeks

Please don’t feel discouraged if your child clings to you, cries, or wanders around in the first few classes. This is completely normal—especially for younger or more cautious personalities.

What helps? Consistency. When your child sees the same space, songs, teacher, and routine week after week, they begin to feel safe and comfortable—and that’s when the real magic happens.

❤️ Caregiver Involvement Matters

At Nestlings, you are your child’s most important musical partner. We don’t expect toddlers to sing on pitch or follow all the actions—but when you sing, smile, and model participation, your little one learns to do the same. Even if it feels silly—join in! Your enthusiasm is contagious.

🐣 Final Thoughts

Our Nestlings program is about joyful connection through music, not performance or perfection. Every child develops at their own pace, and we celebrate wherever they’re at.

Whether your little one is dancing with scarves, banging an egg shaker, or just quietly observing from your lap, they’re absorbing the rhythms of music—and of community.

We’re so happy to have you on this musical journey with us!
